Sad passing of Lionel Slier

The SAJBD was saddened to learn of the passing this week of Lionel Slier, a much loved and respected member of the Jewish community. Lionel was actively involved in many aspects of Jewish communal affairs, including many SAJBD initiatives, throughout his long life. He had a particular interest in recording, promoting and celebrating the history of the community, notably through his popular column "Community Buzz" in the SA Jewish Report as well as through his regular contributions to various publications such as the SAJBD’s journal Jewish Affairs, the Jerusalem Post and the Sunday Times.

A proud Zionist, Lionel served for many years as the chairman of the Zionist Luncheon Club. He was also an active participant in the community's speakers' circuit, sharing his knowledge, insights and wonderful sense of humour. His deep commitment to his heritage and Jewish history was also reflected in his extensive efforts in recording and commemorating the legacy of Isaac Ochberg, who famously rescued some 200 Jewish orphans from war-torn Europe during the 1920s and brought them to South Africa. Through his mother, Sara Altuska, Lionel was himself a proud descendant of the Ochberg Orphans.

Lionel is survived by his loving wife, Alicia; his children, Paula, Jack, and Hayley; and his granddaughters, Ava and Amelie. The SAJBD wishes the family long life; may they be comforted amongst the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.
