A South African Legend – Raymond Ackerman (1931-2023)

The South African Jewish Board of Deputies (SAJBD) is saddened by the passing of Raymond Ackerman, visionary business leader, retail legend and unstinting philanthropist. Throughout his long life, Mr Ackerman’s extraordinary achievements in the business field were combined with his equally impressive record of contributing to the greater society. He was a true patriot and nation builder. He was also an active, identifying member of the Jewish community, with many Jewish organisations and causes benefiting from his generosity over the decades.

Raymond Ackerman never deviated from his belief that the role of business is to give back and to do good for the community. As he continually emphasized, success in retail meant helping to make changes that meaningfully improved the lives of all people in the country. In word and deed, he lived by the principle that being a successful retailer had to go hand in hand with caring about one’s people, community and society. It was on this principle that Pick n Pay was founded and which informs the philosophy of the institution to this day.

Mr Ackerman’s influence was not limited to his counterparts in the business and retail field. By his own example, including as an author and public speaker, he opened people’s eyes to what boldness, initiative, positive thinking and a willingness to think outside the box and try something new can achieve. As such, he became an inspirational figure for all South Africans.

The SAJBD pays tribute to Raymond Ackerman, a true South African legend. We extend our sincerest condolences to the Ackerman family at this sad time. May they be comforted among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.
