The SAJBD was recently alerted to an incident in which a community member was refused service by a business and told: “We do not do business with Zionist killers of babies.”
The matter was reported to us. As with every incident of antisemitism, we assessed the case and got legal advice. A formal legal letter was prepared and sent drawing attention to the defamation and unlawful nature of their conduct. As a direct result of this intervention; the business issued a full and unconditional apology, with an undertaking not to repeat this type of discriminatory behaviour.
The SAJBD treats every reported incident, big or small, with seriousness and urgency. Our mandate is clear: to protect the rights, dignity, and safety of the Jewish community and to confront antisemitism wherever it arises.
In order to act on incidents, the SAJBD relies on members of the community to report every instance of antisemitism - no matter how minor it may seem. Reporting is essential to ensuring that these matters are addressed.
Community members are encouraged to contact the SAJBD Antisemitism Hotline on 078 259 4147.
Through collective vigilance and decisive action, we ensure that antisemitism does not go unchallenged in South Africa.
