LIV Lanseria is a Section 18 PBO that serves the needs of the Lanseria community northwest of Johannesburg. Prior to the lockdown, the organisation’s primary focus was on looking after the children in the area through an orphanage it runs and supporting the creches. Currently, it is helping to support some 1500 residents and fifty essential workers who have been effected by the lockdown.
For its core project the Melrose Birdhaven CAN, headed by Dana Lazarus, is assisting Live Lanseria in meeting these pressing needs. Through financial donations and food drop-offs at the Birdhaven Café in St Andrews Avenue, they have been able to provide for over fifty families. One delivery of food parcels has taken place and another will be made later this week.
In terms of donations, Dana stresses how important it was for those who were able to come on board to do so, even if only in a small way. If everyone gave what they could, even if it was just one or two food tins or R20, the sheer volume of contributions would be enough to make a huge difference.
