The South African Zionist Federation (SAZF) and South African Jewish Board of Deputies (SAJBD) condemn the brutal terrorist attack in Tel Aviv last night Wednesday the 8th of June 2016.  The attack by armed men took place at a popular shopping area nearby a children’s playground. This act of violence resulted in the deaths of 4 innocent civilians and left 11 injured.

This horrendous act highlights the reality that such terrifying atrocities are regularly committed against Israelis.  It is particularly disturbing that extremist groups such as Hamas celebrated the attack yesterday evening, by handing out sweets to children. The glorification of terrorism creates a new generation educated against peace.  United Nations Secretary-General Ban ki-moon condemned the attacks.  In a statement issued he noted: “There is no justification for terrorism nor for the glorification of those who commit such heinous acts,” Mr. Ban added that he was shocked that the leaders of Hamas have chosen to welcome this attack and some to celebrate it.

The SAZF and SAJBD call on all South Africans to condemn in the strongest possible terms these heinous acts.  Our thoughts, prayers and deepest sympathies are with the families of those murdered.  No country is immune from terror.  We also express our wishes for the recovery of the wounded.
